Gross Happiness Product (GHP)

Things that make you go hmmm…..In a world which is increasingly laid out in black and white and driven towards the acquisition of material wealth, it is refreshing to come across a country which dares to aspire for its people’s happiness. The Royal Government of Bhutan, under King Jigme Singye Wangchuck has advocated GHP as the new standard of living. This small country has succeeded in bringing the concept of economic progress versus happiness to the table for discussion. Bhutan has followed a very conservative path of development since the 60s, seeking to preserve its heritage & culture and protecting its environment. Where else will you find legislation declaring that a country’s forest cover should never go below 60%? A senior official from Bhutan recently said “Friends, family, health and tradition are things that make us truly happy.”
