Quote of the Day

“Happiness is essentially a state of going somewhere, wholeheartedly, one-directionally, without regret or reservation.”

Miele Guides: place your vote now for the best restaurant in the region

from Miele Guide’s website:

The Miele Guide will be Asia’s first truly independent regional restaurant guide when launched in October 2008, and also its most authoritative. Written by food lovers who know and love Asia, The Miele Guide will rank and profile restaurants across the region’s major cities, categorised by country, city and cuisine, in a slim, indispensable volume.

The 2008/2009 edition will evaluate restaurants in 16 Asian countries—Brunei, Cambodia, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

A shortlist has been drawn from the region’s top food critics and now it is up to you to finalize which restaurants you think are the best. And if your favourite restaurant is not on the shortlist, you’ll have the option to nominate and vote for it too. From these results, a list of Asia’s top restaurants will be drawn. The guide will rank and profile in detail the top 20 in Asia. The rest will be categorised by country, city and cuisine.

There is quite an eclectic choice for the Philippines: ranging from Lolo Dad’s to Antonio’s to Tsukiji to Kanin Club to Dos Mestizo’s.

Go to http://www.mieleguide.com and vote now for the best restaurant in the Philippines. As an added incentive, you could win a fab dinner in one of Asia’s best restaurants and stay in one of the region’s most luxurious hotels.

Kid’s Furniture: Choices Choices Choices

I’ve always taken the view that the bond between parent and child is strengthened during the infancy years through co-sleeping. At the same time, a child must learn to be independent and be able to enjoy his or her own space. What age that should be is up to the parents and child.

At this point in time, my 5-year old son co-sleeps with us but we are preparing him for the next step: his own room. It was only when we starting exploring the various department stores and furniture shops that we realized that there are so many different choices: bunk beds, twin beds, loft beds.. ACK!!!!

A quick search of the net yielded a gem of a site: www.simplykidsfurniture.com. There are Kids Bedroom Furniture, Kids Desk, Armoires, complete Bedroom Sets. The site has so many options to choose from and caters to all tastes: from fancy to classic, but at all times remaining functional. I fell in love with the classic Wooden Childrens Furniture in particular.

Now if it isn’t furniture that you’re looking for, the site also presents creative ideas for playtime: knights & castles, bed tents, rocking horses, wooden toys, puppets and theaters, doll furniture and accessories. Ahh, truly a one-stop shop for our kids rooms.

We now have another problem: how to whittle down our choices. =)

Work Hard, Play Hard, Die Hard

Since we’re at the epicenter, I didn’t really appreciate how hectic our lives are until someone called our attention to it. Trained to be nitpicky and obsessive compulsive about details, we are always on the lookout for the best, the latest, the brightest. The best getaways, the best bargains, the best food. Woe betide the hapless server who didn’t get the order right or the hapless telemarketer who made the mistake of calling during peak hours.

We work at a frantic pace, chasing deadlines, nurturing ulcers as we strive to achieve perfection in an imperfect setting. We work long hours…. Double booking of events are not uncommon…. Heck, even ‘alone to be with me myself and i’ time needs to be scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance…

Is it all worth it? If not, then what’s the alternative? Much as I hate admitting it, the bucolic lifestyle is not my cup of tea.

It’s a viscious cycle. I was talking with one of my best friends a few weeks about our lifestyle. When we were younger, we thrived on the stress and thought nothing of hopping from an all-nighter to go clubbing or leave at a moment’s notice to check out the latest restaurants. Now that we have families, that is no longer what we want. But we have reached that point in our careers where it is very difficult to cut back.

I can’t help but wonder. Can a working mom really have it all?

Continuing Education at the Regis

In these uncertain times where job security is no longer so secure, an increasing number of people are advocating higher education as one option we can take in order to increasing our earning capacity. The question begs to be answered: how on earth can I study when I’m working. The answer? E-learning and/or Distance Learning.

There are an increasing number of educational institutions addressing the needs of students who, either because of time constraints or physical limitations, are unable to enroll full-time. Here in the Philippines, it’s the open university of the University of the Philippines — care to be classmates with the Megastar? =) For those based in the United States, universities such as Regis launched courses geared specifically towards adults who wish to advance in their careers, change professions, or update their knowledge and skills.

Regis University offers Online MBAs (boasting one of the largest distance learning MBA enrollment in the US) and Online IT Degrees. You don’t need to be based in Colorado or Nevada in order to learn the tools to Nonprofit Management. Regis has taken guided independent study to a whole new level.

Now before rushing off and enrolling, you need to ascertain if online learning is indeed right for you. In order to be successful, you must have strong time management skills, be self-motivated and most imporantly, be comfortable working with technology. Use the time wisely to gain the skills needed to land higher paying jobs.

Money Advisors

If there is anything I regret about my early education is that financial literacy was something which was always taken for granted. Our parents never talked about it and neither did our teachers. We were taught that graduation meant good jobs and good money. There was nothing mentioned about what to do with the money. As the banking system got more complex, it became easier to get money — on credit if need be. We could indulge. Tomorrow was another day… to pay.

And pay we did.. at increasingly high interest rates.

You don’t need to be an expert analyst to be able to manage your family’s finances. Enter the role of money/financial advisors. Previously catering mostly to high net worth individuals, there are now many financial advisors out there who address the concerns of those with money problems.

The internet literally holds a wealth of information. Just seach the web and you will find sites such as Capital One Canada which help people understand their credit and debt: hold to maximize the former and minimize the latter. For those just starting out, it pays to be informed of the various low interest credit cards out in the market: be able to ask questions and ascertain which products best suit your needs. What I also found to be quite interesting is the information about canadian secured credit cards which are geared towards helping people build and/or rebuild their credit.

So what are you waiting for? Make today the start of your financial education! =)
